Orbital Express - By Cruise Family (Not Not Fun 2011)

Preview Buy

"Vienna’s most warped exporter of sideways sci-fi post-rave improv, Stefan Kushima, has cruised a zig-zagged path through laser drone and thumping euro slime to his current position, a curious no man’s land of pirated trance materials stretched into longform psych-style strobe-light sprawls. His last album, Up To Us, flirted with higher BPMs than usual but Orbital Express is a more accurate expression of Cruise Family’s specifically fried dance-damaged hyperspace. The A side track unfolds with a shimmering pool of synth drip before pumping a buried robot beat through a thousand canopies of arpeggiating squiggle and lo-fi LED ambient wash. The B piece is split into two jam zones, one a bouncy midi junk-rave groove, the other a darker, weirder drumless synth dead end, pulsing a swarming alien throb until the power gets cut. Another far-out orbit by this consistently tripped Austrian space cadet. Pro-dubbed tapes in clear cases with fold-out J-cards with ridiculous sci-fi energy ball artwork by SF Broadcasts’ main man." - Not Not Fun

L.A. Vampires - Goes Ital: Street Wise (Not Not Fun 2011)

"Brown's diva persona on So Unreal-- consolidated across a few very Cindy Sherman-esque videos-- was that of the hollow glamour queen. Her Streetwise persona is that of the cool, older girl on your block who is tough enough to be a bully, but who uses her powers to steer the younger ladies in the right direction, telling them which boys are scrubs, how to apply lip liner, and above all, how to be fierce and real. On a Summer afternoon, you'd be likely to find her sitting on a stoop playing TLC, Salt-N-Peppa, and Ace of Base cassettes on a boom box. For this record, Brown teamed up with Daniel Martin McCormick of Ital, Mi Ami, and Sex Worker, and his hand can be felt in the tight, '90s house stylings.

"Tons of Love," with its blaring bass and Brown's cooing vocal, is arguably the most dance floor-ready track on the EP. "A Woman is a Woman" takes us into a sultry, psychedelic hip-hop groove that is both seductive and ominous. The song's refrain-- "A woman is a woman/ And she should show it to the world"-- demands that disco feminists everywhere let their true selves be known. It's the sort of call for "realness"-- ever ill-defined-- that we associate with period pop queens like The Spice Girls. The record closes out with the tranced-out, Ibizan sprawl of "The Chic Shall Inherit the Earth." Brown's final album with her psych-rock band Pocahaunted was called Make it Real. Whereas her previous releases under the LA Vampires moniker have embraced artifice, Streetwise shows us how to perform authenticity." - Altered Zones

Cough Cool - Clausen (Not Not Fun 2011)

Preview Buy

Back in “the day,” it used to be quite a bit more common for rock/pop-ish ambitions and weirdo experimentalism to sit side-by-side. In our current internet radio suggestion-aggregator modern world it’s a lot simpler to hyper-divide everybody into convenient micro-genres, but fortunately there’s still some ornery sticks in those spokes. Which, in a very free association way, is part of what hits home so nicely about Cough Cool (aka the solo mappings of one Dan Svizeny): aggressive eclecticism. Sleepy daydream sunlight guitar-pop nuggets (“Stolen”) dissolve into shoegazed bedroom drum-loop sound-art sculptures (“Parting Friends”). Ragged three-chord apathy-rock sketches (“Whatever”) riff out then get tossed off for backwards-playing acoustic-string reel-to-reel tape experiments (“Special K”). Clausen unspools in the same softly schizophrenic way of the best early Sebadoh sides, scripted melody and noise research tag-teaming like wild mood swings. Pro-dubbed tapes in cases with full-color suburban Halloween J-cards schemed by Brooklyn designer du jour Bobby Houlihan. Edition of 150.- Not Not Fun

Lorelle Meets The Obsolete

Lorelle Meets the Obsolete - The Obsolete Man

Captcha Records, the label that's brought great works from Epsilons, Ga'an, Thee Oh Sees, andTy Segall, has stumbled on Guadalajara's dirty little secret in the form of Lorelle Meets the Obsolete. The Mexican duo sear their way through a heady mix of shoegaze and psychedelia that wobbles when you think it's going to run straight into the foam and scorches just when you're least expecting it to catch fire. The band has a way of wrapping the two genres (and the edges of quite a few more) around their guitar strings and pulling them tight into knots, only to have those same knots disappear in a puff of black smoke. Their On Welfare album is a perfect soundtrack to humid rains, streaked with heat and swelled with the promise of relief. --Andy French, Raven Sings the Blues

Art Post - Swoon Kickstarter Project In New Orleans

Swoon is one of the most innovative living artists today. In the last few years, she has changed the direction of her work so that in leans more towards public service and this piece is no exception. Swoon ability to make great work outside of the gallery system and help people at the same time is simply amazing. Before this project she was building super-adobe homes for families in Haiti and then soon after converting crack dens in Detroit into works of art that were very accessible to the community in that area. So If you feel like getting some awesome gifts and doing something good, donate to Swoons Kickstarter project which can be found Here

Wooden Shjips - Lazy Bones

Wooden Shjips, San Francisco's leading peddlers of psych, have a new album coming out this September on Thrill Jockey. After being around for more than five years, Wooden Shjips is finally releasing their first studio-recorded full-length, West. Produced by Phil Manley of Trans Am and mastered by the recently profiled Sonic Boom, the album's main theme is appropriately said to be “the American West, and all of the mythology, romanticism, and idealism that it embodies." Here's the first track to drop from the California expats' latest, "Lazy Bones." --Ric Leichtung,Altered Zones via Stereogum
