Sapphire Slows - True Breath 12" (Not Not Fun 2011)

Preview Buy

"A fresh voice is hard to find – especially in these days of such dense digital air (‘in the Shadow of the Power of Babble’ internet philosophers say). So it was with nuanced joy that we found ourselves spellbound and seduced by this young Tokyo gem-gleaner’s neon gallery of dynamic Casio nightlife masks, each of which is impeccably crafted and swathed in a fog basket of her effortlessly haunting Cocteau Twins-y shadow vox. There’s a wonderfully hushed vibe to Sapphire Slows’ most translucent tracks, beats materializing out of stray radio waves and metropolis static, electric piano memories washing away into the silent skyline of skyscrapers, synths congealing like synthetic whispers. The perfect soundtrack to urban insomniac wandering and wondering and lingering too long; almost like a Toyko take on Night Bus. True Breath is her stateside debut EP after one previous 7 inch on Big Love, and 2012 should see a full-length plus some global gigging so soak in her subtle night moves now while the breath is still warm. Black vinyl 12 inches in bilingual new wave patterned shadow portrait jackets designed by A & B Brown."- NNF

Art Post - Monica Canilao

Monica Canilao also did the cover for the new Japanther and Bowerbirds albums. This is honestly, one of our favorite artists. My wife and I managed to buy one of her pieces at Southern exposure's Monster Drawing Rally a few years back and it is one of our prized possessions. More information about Monica Canilao can be found here!

Art Post - Michelle Devereux

"Dudes on Pizza" exhibition at Domy Books-Austin, Tx
(This is the most amazing book store in the country.)
"Michelle Devereux presents a series of realistically rendered drawings combining airbrush and colored pencil that depict some of her fellow Austin artists hoverboarding through surreal landscapes on slices of pizzas. Her work is an experiment in transcending graphic representation to reveal trite but true archetypes of human desire and fantasy that in the end aren’t just about her liking pizza or the people on them but rather humanity’s obsession with food and man’s desire to fly."- Donut Chocula (via)

Expensive Looks - Dark Matters (Group Tightener 2012)

Preview Buy

"Alec Feld grew up in New York on a steady diet of Chicago house, disco, old Motown stuff and a smattering of his parents’ psych records, as well as “trashy ’90s dance.” Dark Matters is his debut LP as Expensive Looks. It flows continuously across nine tracks, touching on elements of all the music he grew up on: hypnotic house, textured minimalism, and the gorgeous moment of musical epiphany that happens when a beat drops out and all that’s left is the aural equivalent of taking a deep breath and staring at the stars. It’s a dance record with the sort of scrappy, open heart that can only come from someone like Feld. Expensive Looks is all encompassing, it draws from all genres without border, pulling everything into one warped but pointed mass." - Group Tightener
